Hey ya'll..some of you might not know that I took part in a project organised by the Child Development Psychology Club of HELP Uni College. This is their 4th visit to Janda Baik, Pahang.
What do we do there? Well, we eat sleep and talk...Besides that, we are there to educate, entertain and play with orphans of one of the orphanages in Janda Baik. We are also to visit the aborgines in KampungSongkok, bring them food and clothes :)
All 19 of us left HELP around 7 15am. The journey did not take more than an hour. It was a really bumpy ride ! i was all excited and so was the others. We will be living with Pn.Ainon. Technically we won't be leaving in her house, we will be leaving in a small but comfortable wooden house inside her compound.
This is the wooden house we lived in..cute huh?? don't worry ! there are 2 bathrooms, lights and fans..although we don't really need the fan when we sleep since its cold outside
Mun Yee : Presenting the house of Pn Ainon !!
Inside her compound, there are 2 wooden pondoks.. we had our workshop for children here. The facilitators are divided into 2 groups : children and teenagers. The children group will be educated on english and maths while the teenager group will be concentrating on interpersonal skills, sex education and etc. I was placed in the children group.
As soon as we got there, we unpacked all our belongings and all the stuff we brought for the orphans and the aborgines.
In no time, the orphans arrive. At the beginning, i was scared. I speak really bad BM !! lolBut as time went by, i got used to it. Besides the orphans, a small group of aborgine kids arrived. For your information, both orphans and aborgines do not mix. Its mostly because the aborgines have really low self-esteem. Anyways we facilitators introduced ourselves, sang our theme song, talked to them, mingle with them and then started with our respective workshops.YES ! the kids were bored...the aborgines even fell asleep while learning the parts of the body in english. But they were smart. they tried their very best to pronounce it right. So did the orphans, they were really dedicated to learn.
Towards the end of the workshop, they were happy because they were able to do some colouring and man, i can't tell you good their colouring was especially the aborgines :)
We all had lunch. Played a little game then off we go with our maths workshop. The younger kids learned about numbers while the older kids learned how to read the clock. I'm pretty sure they learned a lot.Let me tell you about some of the kids..There is this little girl Wanie, she is really shy, didn't want to talk to anyone till a few hours later. Syamil, my braniac. he is both cheeky, naughty and smart. He tries to answer eventhough the question is not directed to him. Fatimah K and Fatimah S !! Super cute !! Imagine someone has the same name as me.. Kooi Chin A! Kooi Chin B !Goffar ! He came on the first day with an army shirt on..lol..when i told him to come join the rest, he said its boring and he will come join us when he wants to..LOLSiti Nur Hamidah.. this girl is a future photographer. She likes taking photographs of people. She talks alot too !!Ros..She is one of the aborgines who joined us. On the 2nd day, she was the only one who came :( but she is really friendly and openOwh and there is this other boy, who loves playing with Jenn Ming's guitar. He will simply strum the guitar and sing love songs..one of songs he sang was about a love triangle and he is only 9 to 10? lol
After the workshop, Joel took them out to the field which is also in Pn Ainon's compound to play football !!As soon as the kids left, we packed stuff and headed to Kampung Songkok, it's about a half an hour ride.
To get to Kampung Songkok, we have to pass Gotong Jaya and the Skyway !Kampung Songkok is where 14 aborgine families live. After we got there, we divided everything, food (rice, eggs, sugar, flour, biscuit, bread) and clothes and distributed them to each family.
Pn. Ainon was with us too :)

We took a little tour around the village near the "highway".
This is one of the old brick houses they lived in.. Some has no door, no window panes. Most houses has no furniture in it, they sit, eat and sleep on the floor. They have no electricity..
This is the wooden houses they lived in.. Similar to the other old brick houses, no furniture, no bed no electricity. You can find tv sets and speakers in their house but it can't be used. The government is about to demolish this wooden houses, but no worries, they build the aborgines new brick houses :)

Janda Baik 4 facilitators and the aborgines
After visiting their houses, I feel really grateful for what I have and I am dedicated to help them even more..
As soon as we got back, we had our bath (19 facis, 2 bathroom), dinner (spahgetti and mushroom soup) ,Pn Ainon's interview, "sharing" session, star gazing and sleep. That is the end of day 1 !
Day 2 started with breakfast..Nuggets and tuna sandwiches.
The orphans are back !! there will be no workshop today but TREASURE HUNT ! I was even more excited about the treasure hunt than the kids *malu*Both Vivian and I are in charge of team "goat"
This is team 'goat' everyone !! say HIIOverall, the treasure hunt was fun. There were 5 main stations each team has to go through. In each station, they are asked questions about what they have learned from the workshop the day before ! I was running around with them while trying to avoid cat poop. Pn Ainon has hundreds of them..Our team did not win but we got 2nd place !! it's good enough for me...Good Job Goatss !!
